Our Focus

Primary Initiatives, Target Populations, and Scope of Work:

The overall objective of the BSP – IV is to further develop and disseminate biogas plants as a mainstream renewable energy solution in rural Nepal, while better addressing poverty, social inclusion and regional balance issues and at the same time ensuring enhanced commercialisation and sustainability of the sector.

BSP-Nepal is being implemented after successful completion of the first 3 phases. The BSP Phase IV had originally aimed to install 200,000 biogas plants during the 6 years period. The total number of household sized biogas plants reached upto 229,759 in 75 districts of the country covering as many as 2,800 Village Development Committees (VDCs) by July 15, 2010.

Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

Poeple still belie in traditional cooking practices e.g. burning of dung cakes. It is difficult to motivate people to construct toilets in their house to keep their surroundings clean and hygienic especially in Terai region.

Market development for improved cooking technologies:

1) Scaling up with - increase and expansion in subsidy provision, - increase in access to credit, increased capacity of private sector and others, increased level of awareness and promotional activities.
2) Making the programme more holistic by - reaching to the poor and disadvantage, - reaching remote areas,
3) Increased roles of biogas companies and their association in capacity building and promotional activities, in quality management and self regulation etc.
4) Increased focus on bio-slurry promotion
5) Further consolidation of peogramme activities, particularly around capacity and system building for sustainability.

Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

ISO 9001:2000 Certification for the Quality Management System of BSP-Nepal.
However, quality standardization for all the biogas appliances will be certified by the RETC (Renewable Energy Testing Centre) established by the Alternative Energy Promotion Center/Government of Nepal.

Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

Annual Biogas Users' Survey to provide overview on biogas program implementation and measure, its success in terms of qualitative and quantitative achievement.

Quality control of 15% of constructed biogas plants/after sales service provided by the biogas companies.
- Monitoring of bio-slurry and bio-compost uses which are the factors of improving agriculture yield and replaces chemical fertilizer.
- Toilet construction and connection, improved sanitation and less dependence on cattle dung.
- Green House Gas (GHG) emission reduction and contribution to reduction in global warming.
