Carbon Clear

Mission

Carbon Clear originates greenhouse gas emission reduction credits ("carbon credits") for the voluntary carbon offset market. Carbon Clear was founded by international development and environmental practitioners. This emphasis means that we form long-term relationships with our local partners. Wherever possible, we work directly with the local project team instead of buying carbon offsets from intermediaries.

The projects in which we invest must meet strict quality screens. These include:

* Additionality – showing that the project would not have happened without carbon credit funding. We use the CDM Tool for Additionality to evaluate our projects
* Third party validation and verification – to prove that the promised carbon reductions are real
* Sustainable livelihood benefits – providing social benefits for local communities. These include improved access to household energy and a reduction in indoor and ambient air pollution.

Our Focus

Primary Initiatives, Target Populations, and Scope of Work:

In terms of IAP, Carbon Clear is currently supporting efficient cook stove projects in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo aimed at reaching several tens of thousands of households. In 2010, we are launching a post-2012 carbon fund to generate both CERs and VERs from sustainable development projects in Africa, Latin America and selected Asian countries.

Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

None noted

Market development for improved cooking technologies:

We provide carbon finance that helps make cleaner cooking technologies and approaches a viable option for low-income users and entrepreneurs.

Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

None noted

Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

Projects that we support must have a well-defined and budgeted monitoring plan for tracking emission reductions over a 7-10 year time frame. We are extremely interested in the health and other benefits that accrue from projects we support, and would help finance Indoor Air Pollution (IAP) and health monitoring, as appropriate.

Our Contribution to the Partnership

Based on the multiple benefits of cleaner cooking projects, we are especially interested in providing needed match financing for these initiatives, and helping participating organizations tell their story to the general public. Our management team has significant experience in the clean energy for development arena, and business management skills that we bring to bear to help assess and strengthen the viability of the projects we support.
