EcoZoom

Mission

EcoZoom is a social venture with the mission of getting ecological products to the world. We are starting with cookstoves because we see that as one of the biggest needs in the world. Cooking is literally killing people; we want to make it safe.

EcoZoom has the exclusive rights to internationally distribute the stove designed by the Aprovecho Research Center, a leading nonprofit organization in the design, engineering and testing of improved cookstoves.

Our Focus

Primary Initiatives, Target Populations, and Scope of Work:

EcoZoom works with NGOs, governments, aid organizations and local business and entrepreneurs who want to put stoves into the hands of people who need them. We are also pursuing our own large scale projects.

Besides stoves, we provide support, advice, and third party testing results to organizations we work with. We can assist with shipping, navigating customs, connecting people in country, and a host of other logistics.

EcoZoom leaves the distribution to in-country partners because they know their project areas and goals best. Partners can work on a small scale, like a single village, or a large scale, like a whole country. We know there are different tools for different jobs and we work with our partners to make sure they have what they need to succeed.

In 2010 containers of stoves have been sent to 19 different countries on four continents. That is over 32,000 stoves placed! We can currently produce 60,000 stoves per month. Capacity can be scaled to meet higher project demands.

Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

Our stove was designed with cooks in mind. They were consulted on every step along the way and now our stove is being used in countries on six continents. Since our stove uses biomass or charcoal, it is not a departure from traditional fuels. The ability to use traditional fuels makes the stove more attractive to cooks and they can see the health and economic benefits more clearly. We think more efficient stoves that use traditional fuel are an important first step to more sustainable, healthy cooking practices.

Market development for improved cooking technologies:

We are continually developing new markets for our improved cookstove. Besides working with partners in developing countries, we are also selling the stoves in developed world markets. This practice raises awareness about the issues associated with traditional cooking practices and helps fund work we do in developing countries.

Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

EcoZoom works with the Aprovecho Research Center to design and test its improved cookstoves.

Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

Our company has not historically focused on monitoring. We do extensive testing of our stoves in the laboratory and the field prior to distributing them. Our partners provide us with some testimonials from cooks about their health and other improvements.
