Gadgil Lab – Stoves (GLS), a part of Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and the University of California Berkeley, designs and develops low emission, fuel efficient, and culturally viable cookstoves in support of reducing the environmental, monetary, and health burden on relevant populations in poorer countries. GLS also strives to provide rigorous scientific testing of these and other improved stoves to validate claims of improved cooking.

Our Focus
GLS continues to test and refine the design of the Berkeley-Darfur Stove (BDS), a clean cookstove made for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the Darfur region of Sudan which is tailored to their cooking style and climate. Through a partnership with the nonprofit organization, Potential Energy, thousands of BDS have been distributed, primarily in North Darfur, with plans to greatly expand efforts throughout the region. GLS is also working on a modified version of the stove for use in Ethiopia and has conducted third party testing of charcoal stoves for distribution in Haiti.
Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas
A user-centered design approach is utilized by GLS, observing cultural cooking practices and incorporating user feedback to promote design compatibility with the specific culture. This approach aims to increase user satisfaction and therefore full adoption.
