Our Focus
GreenLight is currently focused on small scale power generation for communities with no accessibility to the national grid, or opportunities to afford the mainstream electricity supply. The focus on clean cooking energy is also a priority for GreenLight. An ongoing study focuses on tapping into the biofuels market, as a means to provide clean cooking fuels for household use. The potential for introducing ethanol cookstoves is currently analysed, with a strong focus on user acceptance and adaptability.
Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas
Mozambique is a multicultural nation, with notable differences from one community to another. This is a potential barrier for the introduction of standardized cooking technologies countrywide. For this reason, Greenlight works at the community level, with a strong focus on participation appraisal research methods, as a means to introduce and modify technologies that best fit under the specific socio-cultural context. Socio-cultural analysis is a priority research area prior to the introduction of any improved technology. This ensures the sustainability of the project in the long run.
GreenLight is currently focused on developing a market for biofuels to be used in the household cooking market. Mozambique aspires to be a leading biofuels producer in Africa - with capacity to supply both national and international markets. The use of biofuels in the household sector can be seen as "a focus shift from cars to people." It is also an interest to use waste material from the biofuels industry to co-generate electricity for either farm supply or to benefit off grid community energy creation.
Technology standardization is often seen as a barrier to the mass adoption of improved cooking technologies. GreenLight works on a regional to community scale, as a means to develop technologies which best fit into the socio-cultural context of the region. Technology modification is often required for successful user acceptance.
Because GreenLight's involvement is on a permanent time frame, as opposed to a project basis, monitoring of ongoing projects is made possible. Monitoring and evaluations to determine the sustainability of cooking stove projects is a crucial part of our involvement in the field.
