Greenway Grameen Infra

Mission

Greenway Grameen Infra (GGI) is a social enterprise, run by a group of young social entrepreneurs, dedicated to improve rural infrastructure by creating products which satisfy the needs of the rural population living in developing and under developed countries. We are committed towards developing “High Immediate Impact” solutions, catering to some of the most critical needs at the Base of Pyramid.

GGI has a high focus on 'Affordable and Clean Household Energy & Health Solutions'. The company’s first product, Greenway Smart Stove GSSV3, is a single burner high efficiency cookstove designed as an eco-friendly and modern replacement for traditional mud & stone stoves (chullahs). GSSV3 is a result of user centric research and delivers fuel savings of up to 65% and minimizes harmful CO/CO2 emissions and particulate matter. It also delivers convenient cooking without any requirement of fuel processing or change in cooking habits for the rural population.

Our Focus

Primary Initiatives, Target Populations, and Scope of Work:

Over 70% of the households (168 million) in India rely on traditional energy and 89% of these households are in the rural areas, using inefficient traditional stoves. GGI is focussing on developing a robust distribution network across rural India targeting households that use traditional mud chullahs (cookstoves). However, the semi-urban population that have access to LPG are also a key target segment, as these households also prefer cleaner, yet cost efficient, cookstoves that run on cheaper and easy available fuel such as firewood and biomass.
GGI also works closely with government bodies, large corporates, NGO's and other institutions which share the same passion of developing a sustainable rural infrastructure in India. Exports to similar markets (such as Africa and South East Asia) is also GGI's focus area.

Supporting CSR initiatives of large organizations:

GGI works closely with both private and public sector companies in India to support their community development initiatives. GGI is also in the process of registering India's first Programmatic CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) on cookstove dissemination with the United Nations.

Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

Co-creation with end-user communities: The crux of a superior design of the Greenway Smart Stove has been co-creation with end-users and subject matter experts. GGI experts traveled extensively to rural areas of India (about 12 states and over 50 villages) interacting with end-users about their fuel preferences and product features, incorporating their feedback in to the final product design. The cookstove has been modified several times after thorough field testing for over a year to finally arrive at a technologically superior and affordable product.

Market development for improved cooking technologies:

A robust distribution network: GGI's main focus is to reach the Indian rural consumer directly by creating a robust distribution network across rural India. GGI aims to cover over 200 districts across major Indian states to supply its products directly to the rural consumer at affordable prices.
We are also working closely with NGO's and government bodies in other countries to cater to the local market there.

Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

User Centric design following core principles of engineering and manufacturing.

Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

Extensive Field Testing, Certified lab testing, Interactive Rural Design Workshops, EndUser-Driven Design Cycle.

Our Contribution to the Partnership

We hope to contribute to PCIA and the modern cookstove development community through our collective 30+ years experience in product design, Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and distribution. We can assist upcoming modern cookstove projects in developing and under developed countries by assisting in product design, market adoption techniques, field testing, material selection, or by directly providing low cost yet effective prototypes for use in market pilot initiatives.

We are undertaking India’s first Programmatic CDM on improved cookstove dissemination that allows for projects in various geographies to not only have financial security in terms of sales of CERs but also leads to avoidance of risk vis a vis the registration of the project with UNFCCC with respect to monetary outlay as well as time.
