Nexus Carbon for Development

Mission

The mission of Nexus Carbon for Development (Nexus) is to create a fair and transparent carbon market that will tackle climate change and poverty.

Nexus is committed to fairness and transparency.
- Fairness drives our work as we promote climate fairness - access to energy for all and the right to clean development - at the international negotiations on climate change, in carbon markets and to our members and partners.
- Transparency guides our relations with our staff, members, partners and external stakeholders.

Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

Projects which are deemed appropriate to partner with us must conform to certain criteria, including that they are low-carbon technologies which provide real pro-poor benefits. In order to do this, they must not have any dis-benefits. We monitor the projects that we work with on a yearly basis to ensure that they adhere to these standards.

Market development for improved cooking technologies:

Nexus members include NGOs and also social businesses, who are committed to ensuring that their projects are driven by market forces. In these projects, in order to ensure that technologies are affordable to end users, carbon finance is secured. The financial sustainability of all our projects is crucial, and this generally requires buy-in from the end users, to ensure ownership of the project and its long term success.

Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

We work with NGOs who have expertise in a number of technologies, and due to the nature of carbon finance, there must be a homogeneous technology from which emissions can be measured and calculations scaled up to the entire project. In order to ensure this is the case, technologies from projects receiving carbon finance are tested under the monitoring and verification process to ensure that they are standardised.

Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

In terms of carbon finance, monitoring is an integral part of these projects - and is often difficult, expensive and can lack synergies with the real situation on the ground. We have worked with NGOs to find unique ways to reduce costs, time and energy but still ensure that the relevant information is gathered, which is required for project verification.

Our Contribution to the Partnership

We offer expertise in carbon finance and hold trainings which would be useful to other PCIA members. Our network of partner organisations also means that we hold valuable experience of a range of technologies and dissemination methods, and are keen to ensure that this knowledge and expertise is available for others to learn from.
