FAIR CLIMATE NETWORK

Mission

The general objective of Fair Climate Network is to build and strengthen a sustainable, international carbon credit value chain for rural households in South Asia. The specific objectives are:
a. To assist the organisations which form part of the Fair Climate Network India, in identifying, preparing and setting up sustainable energy projects such as Improved Cookstove, Biogas, Solar Photovoltaic Lamps, etc. for the rural poor which are financed on the basis of the generation of carbon credits through CDM and Voluntary Markets;
b. To build up and strengthen the capacity of NGOs, in or outside the Fair Climate Network India, in relation to the carbon credit cycle management;
d. To link the NGOs and the Network to carbon funding in order to secure forward funding of the projects and to realize the sale of the carbon credits at a fair price (which means that all the net revenues from the sales will flow back to the communities which generated the credits).

Primary Initiatives, Target Populations, and Scope of Work:

Currently through the network, 6 improved cookstove, 3 biogas and 1 solar photovoltaic lamp CDM projects are in the pipeline. These projects are being implemented for the rural poor in various states of India through grassroot NGOs. These projects will benefit in attaining sustainable development goals by empowering women and improving the health of the communities. Though initiated and currently in India, we will extend the activities to South Asia eventually.

Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

The cookstoves are first distributed to a few households to get their feedback on usage and the modifications required for use. We convey this to the manufacturer so that cookstoves can be modified to address the requirements of the communities. The communities will also be trained to use the cookstoves.

Market development for improved cooking technologies:

We have NGOs who are partnering with the manufacturers of cookstoves. The manufacturer will be coordinating with various NGOs to develop markets for improved cookstoves through CDM and voluntary market.

Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

The network would be interested in technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation.

Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

Since the projects will be registered as Gold Standard projects, the network will also be interested in monitoring indoor air pollution and health monitoring for traditional cookstoves, improved cookstoves and biogas units.

Our Contribution to the Partnership

We can share our experience with regard to the implementation of CDM biogas and improved cookstove projects. We can also contribute to various aspects of monitoring the cookstoves and the indoor air quality.
