Mission

Development and provision of appropriate technologies in the area of energy management towards sustainable socio-economic development for low-income people. Introduction and development of ICS in Honduras, Zambia, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and India. In Pakistan smokeless stoves in combination with water heating facility. Improvement of Solar Water Heaters in Mali, Ghana, Nepal and Pakistan. Development of thermal insulation for houses in cold areas and high altitudes as measurement to reduce energy requirements. Improvement in solar shading (protection) and solar intake (heat energy) in Senegal, and West Africa school design, Pakistan and Nepal housing in the Himalayas. Development of small scale biogas reactors for rural areas in Nepal with CDM application. Technology development of small scale urban biogas reactors for semi-rural India and Pakistan. Zero Leakage Urban Biogas Reactor (ZLUBR) with costructed wetland.

Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

Developing structures and linking real in-house demonstration and awareness programmes for the introduction, banking on peer-to-peer promotion. Development of illustrated manuals and videos.

Market development for improved cooking technologies:

Develop products together with local institutes and entrepreneurs for local replication and production. Setting up market mechanisms for supply of essential source materials and tools, provide advise and training for entrepreneurs (business plans). Realise 'Rapid Market Appraisal' for product ideas and stimulate enetrepreneur exchange visists for on-the-job training and building associations. Provide support and networking for village based credit organisations and Saving and Loan Schemes (guarantee funds).

Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

Reducing energy needs is a combination of technology change (improvement) in existing equipment such as moving from an enclosed fire to a "rocket" model, and introducing new technologies such as gasifier and solar water heater/cooker. Large energy savings can be obtained from behavioural change, such as the cooking method. Very large energy savings can be obtained in cold climate zones from thermal insulation of buildings, space organisation and behaviour. Equally large (electricity) savings can be obtained in hot climates on air conditioning (AC) through thermal insulation and appropriate house design.

Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

The monitoring of peoples behaviour during the use of the cooking and other equipment and within their daily households provides detailed information on product acceptance and options for further modifications towards high consumer satisfaction.
