Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Institute (REEEI)

Mission

REEEI is a joint venture initiative between the Polytechnic of Namibia and the Ministry of Mines and Energy. Its mandate is to collect and disseminate information on renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies and practices. Currently REEEI is running a DANIDA funded Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Capacity Building Programme (REEECAP), whose objective is to increase the use of renewable energy and energy efficiency measures to promote environmentally sustainable socio-economic development of Namibia. In the same spirit REEEI is working closely with manaufacturers of efficient (tsotso) stoves, solar cookers, and, wood gasifiers to promote these and other technologies.

Primary Initiatives, Target Populations, and Scope of Work:

REEEI is a Namibia based organisation and its programs are based in Namibia. The target polpulation is urban and in informal settlements of rural areas. In rural and informal settlements the focus is on promotion of improved tsotso and solar stoves, biogas as well as solar home systems. In the urban environment, the focus is on promotion of energy efficient practices like lighting, water heating and cooking on solar stoves.

Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

Namibia is generally a desert country and as such traditional fuels are always a challenge to access. Alternative technologies that save on these fuels have generally been accepted.

Market development for improved cooking technologies:

The Institute feels there is great room for improvement in terms of marketing of solar stoves. We are currently exploring ways of assisting the manufacturers of the stoves on how they can expand their market.

Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

Manufacturers is Namibia have generally adopted world standards for these technologies. The Ministry of Mines and Energy in partnership with UNDP have promoted the adoption of world standards for solar stoves.

Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

It is an area of great interest for the Institute.
