Primary Initiatives, Target Populations, and Scope of Work:

Our target population is mostly slums dwellers in Chittagong, Bangladesh. About 75% are pro-poor and earn money through rickshaw pulling and selling goods. About 60% of the total energy currently used in Bangladesh comes from traditional fuels like tree branches, leaves, cow dung, etc. In our target slum areas, most of the hard-core poor households use scrap pieces of cloth collected from nearby garments factories. This type of fuel is extremely harmful to human health.

Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

We would like to overcome social and cultural barriers through: awareness building and formation of community management committees; integration of men, women and children through a process of social mobilization; and; capacity building.

Market development for improved cooking technologies:

We would like to conduct social marketing through direct community participaiton. We would also like to involve potential local entrepreneurs who are experienced and/or interested in promoting and selling improved cookstoves and other kitchen related equipments.

Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

We would like to emphasize locally appropriate technologies for cooking and heating. We would like to adopt systems which will be easily accessible for the poorest comminities.

Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

We are interested to conduct IAP monitoring and would like to engage household members, local physicians, and community leaders in this process.

Relevant Publications or Studies

We have completed a preliminary study of IAP in our working area and have found that smoke from stoves is a health and potenatial fire hazard, affecting the health and safety of household members.

Our Contribution to the Partnership

We would like to participate in the Partnership to obtain IEC (information, education, and communication) materials and the latest information from international arena through PCIA. We are interested to keep the Partnership informed about activities in the field of household energy, indoor air pollution, and health by sharing relevant documents and studies.
