Buikwe Dairy Development Cooperative Society

Mission

Buikwe Dairy Development Cooperative Society was conceived in 2006 and formally registered in 2008 under the Trade and Industry Department Reg.no.8294/RCS by a group of rural dairy farmers. GOAL To increase household incomes and improve rural livelihoods through improved dairy production, marketing and promotion of waste as resource in Buikwe County. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES 1. To promote Biogas production and use among rural dairy farmers in Buikwe county 2. To improve on-farm productivity and market access for dairy farmers in Buikwe county 3. To promote rainwater harvesting, good hygiene and sanitation practices among dairy farmers in Buikwe County 4. To provide counseling and guidance for HIV/AIDS control among dairy farmers in Buikwe county 5. To promote Cooperative principles for rural development EXPECTED IMPACTS •Improved environmental management and reduced groundwater contamination in this part of Lake Victoria basin • Reduced reliance on tree cutting, kerosene and electricity as a source of energy • Reduced incidence of diseases attributed to poor hygiene and sanitation • Dairy farmers adopted energy saving stoves and biogas for lighting and cooking. The Dairy Cooperative Society is planning to implement a project “Promoting waste as a resource among small scale dairy farmers” The project will support those initiatives by individual farmers promoting Biogas and Bio-latrine technology although it has note yet attracted financial support.

Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

Mobilising farmers and visiting those that have tried it out. Its a new idea that might take time to adopt especially since Biolatrines handle an element of feaces.


Market development for improved cooking technologies:

We are starting with our farmers being a cooperative society. It is still weak.


Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

We still need external technical support although most of the houses of the members are not constructed to standard.


Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:
