Primary Initiatives, Target Populations, and Scope of Work:

1. Clean Air Sri Lanka (CleanAirSL) concern is about all the people in Sri Lanka and especially focused on the areas of vehicle emissions and indoor air pollution. At present CleanAirSL is developing an action plan to upgrade and improve rural household kitchens and cook stoves which cause respiratory diseases among most of the poor rural women.

2. Road side vehicle emission Testing programme- this is focus on proactive awareness creation for the successful implementation of vehicle emission reduction programme. these testing programmes highlight the importance of vehicle maintanance and care in reducing emission and make vehicle owners aware of the impact of vehicle emissions. This programme also will cover the whole Island.

Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

Limited awareness on air pollution and associated health effects.


Market development for improved cooking technologies:

The Clean Air Sri Lanka has conducted several awareness programmes on indoor air pollution due to traditional cooking stoves for the school children in past years. And CleanAirSL will hope to introduce new efficient cooking stoves and technologies to community and will develop some rural industries to produce improved cooking stoves as an alternative livelihood.


Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

The Clean Air Sri Lanka is currently preparing guidelines to minimise indoor air pollution with the support of the Institute of Architects, Sri Lanka and also assisting the government to develop new policies to reduce indoor air pollution.


Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

Participated in the indoor air pollution management pilot project conducted by Ministry of Environment, Sri Lanka to monitor indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring in selected economic layers of households in Sri Lanka.
