Sobre La Roca: Energias Alternativas

Sobre La Roca's mission is to care for the inheritance of our children, so they may have a life with pure air, lush vegetation, sweet water and a viable alternative for preparing their sustenance in order to have a better life.

Our vision is to reach all people in Bolivian homes so we may teach them about the greatest threats to the natural environment, and show them better alternative methods of meeting their needs in order to live a better life.

Sobre La Roca is currently collaborating with the CEDESOL Foundation, municipal and regional governmental agencies and non-profits to provide education regarding the health benefits of transitioning to solar and high efficiency biomass stoves for domestic cooking to reduce indoor air pollution, which is the second leading cause of disease and death among poor families in rural communities.

Our Focus

Primary Initiatives, Target Populations, and Scope of Work:

Sobre La Roca, in collaboration with the CEDESOL Foundation, is actively involved in projects targeted to serve families in poor communities in Central and Southern Bolivia. The Canadian organization Kyoto Twist Solar Cooking Society recently subsidized the sale of solar and biomass cook stoves to make them more affordable in the target community of San Benito, near Chochabamba. World Vision donated funds that made it possible to provide 40 stoves at no cost to families living in the village of Machareti in the far southeast of Bolivia.

Sobre La Roca manufactures state of the art solar and biomass cooking stoves. In collaboration with CEDESOL, Sobre La Roca not only provides the latest technology, but also the comprehensive training, education, and after sales service and support that is necessary in order for families to be willing to make fundamental changes in their lives. Eliminating nearly all indoor air pollution results in a significant reduction in disease and early mortality, in addition to substantial savings of money and time, as the families no longer have to purchase or collect wood.

Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

Since 1999, the work of Sobre La Roca has consistently supported the four central PCIA focus areas in all projects. Sobre La Roca meets the needs of local communities for clean, efficient, affordable and safe cooking options by providing state of the art solar cookers and high efficiency biomass stoves, which save energy, lives and money, providing an opportunity for poor, rural families to envision a brighter, healthier future for their children. Indoor air pollution is practically eliminated and significant amounts of both time and money are saved because solar cookers require no wood and efficient biomass stoves provide significant reductions in the amount of wood used.

Having manufactured and sold solar and efficient biomass stoves for 10 years, substantial growth is anticipated as more communities learn about the advantages of solar and efficient biomass cooking, as governmental agencies become more involved and more financing organizations focused on carbon reduction and offsets become aware of the efficacy of our marketing, manufacturing and distribution strategies. It has become increasingly evident that culture resistance and barriers are greatly reduced and/or eliminated as more communities and families become aware of the substantial health, financial and social benefits of solar and efficient biomass cooking. The value of the product, the training and education and the after sales service that is provided speak for themselves. Sobre La Roca is a well known and well regarded brand. Media has also been an important marketing tool, especially radio and television.

Market development for improved cooking technologies:

The full costs of solar and biomass stoves can be a disincentive for poor families. Fortunately, price reductions are becoming more available thanks to CEDESOL's collaboration with a number of funding sources focused on carbon reduction and carbon offsets. In addition, Sobre La Roca is testing new designs and investigating the potential for mass produced stoves. Credit is also becoming more available as lending agencies become more knowledgeable regarding the cost savings associated with solar and efficient biomass cooking that substantially improve the credit worthiness of families in communities experiencing high rates of poverty.

Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

Sobre La Roca is already participating in state of the art technology exchange on a global scale. In collaboration with CEDESOL, Sobre La Roca is working with organizations such as Aprovecho Institute, Solar Cookers International and Solar Household Energy to promote and take advantage of technological improvements and testing by others, as well as through our in-house empirical testing. The solar technology world is moving closer to standardized testing and certification procedures.

Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

In 2008, in collaboration with CEDESOL, Sobre La Roca began a monitoring program based on the Gold Standard methodology used to establish carbon credits. We currently use a one-page sales record to collect demographic and behavioral information, as well as fuel usage and other basic information. Our well designed Kitchen Surveys and Kitchen Tests are used to establish baselines, and some of our projects are monitored by CINER and GTZ.
