Mission

My primary research interests are biological air pollutants in indoor air, which include microorganisms, microbial toxins, allergens, and molds. I am interested to examine how these biological pollutants interact with smoke and other chemical pollutants and develop human respiratory health hazards.

Our Focus

Primary Initiatives, Target Populations, and Scope of Work:

As stated above, I am interested to examine how air pollutants of biological origin interact with smoke and other chemical pollutants and develop human respiratory health hazards. This research area is particularly applicable for rural populations in developing countries. I would be happy to collaborate with any international PCIA Partner to develop a joint research project (involving rural population and assessment of their inhalable exposure to indoor air pollutants) addressing this topic.

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

Getting access to rural populations and epidemiologists in developing countries is a problem for my research endeavor. Furthermore, most health-related research grants in the USA are restricted for spending within the country only. If any Partner can inform me about international research funding opportunities, I would appreciate that very much.

Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

My research focuses on the exposure assessment and characterization of airborne and dust borne microorganisms, aeroallergens, endotoxin, and(1→3)-β-d-glucan in occupational, residential, and ambient environments, which are relevant to respiratory allergy, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, infectious diseases, and immunomodulation. Additionally, I have been involved with several projects focusing indoor air pollution and biohazard control using air ionization and photocatalytic oxidation methods, application of halogen-enriched filled nanocomposite materials for inactivating airborne bacteria and viruses, influences of air pollutants (particulate matter and ozone) and meteorological changes on airborne microbial flora, and respiratory protection against airborne microorganisms.
