Trees, Water & People

Mission

Trees, Water & People (TWP) improves people's lives by helping communities protect, conserve and manage the natural resources upon which their long-term well-being depends. TWP's international projects revolve around the protection of forests and watersheds in Latin America. In conjunction with these efforts TWP introduces fuel-efficient, wood-burning cookstoves into communities where we work to reduce the demand of wood products from these forests. The resulting benefits include: 1) removal of toxic smoke from the kitchen resulting in cleaner, healthy kitchens; 2) less deforestation and 3) less economic expenditures resulting from lowered consumption. Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

TWP works with local women to adapt the new technology to local cooking habits, needs and desires.

Market development for improved cooking technologies:

TWP is currently partnering with a number of different international and regional NGOs and government agencies to develop a micro-enterprise stove program in Honduras. TWP's stove program in Nicaragua is market-based.

Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

All of TWP's stove projects are based on the same proven, standardized combustion principles of clean combustion, insulation, greater heat transfer and use of chimneys for removal of toxic smoke and particles.

Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

TWP is helping to sponsor a study of both exposure and emissions in Honduras.

Our Contribution to the Partnership

TWP has partnered extensively with many international and regional NGOs to help promote and introduce fuel-efficient, safe cookstoves throughout Latin America. Beyond just introducing these stoves, TWP has helped sponsor research into both socio-economic and health related affects of these stoves on the users. In collaboration with other NGOs and governmental agencies, TWP will continue to help gather important information about improved cookstoves while also promoting these technologies throughout the region.
