This includes the implementation of improved stoves that reduce smoke inside the house and save fuel, contributing to a more pleasant environment at home.

Our Focus
ADRA Peru is part of the national campaign for 2011 "Half a million improved stoves for a Peru without smoke." For projects being developed in the regions of Ancash, Cusco, Huanuco and Lima ADRA Peru has been working with rural populations in the 1st and 2nd quintiles of poverty. Stoves that are being implemented are properly certified by the relevant entity and have the participation and contribution of communities. To date we have implemented 10,000 improved stoves.
Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas
(i) Meeting Social/Behavioral Needs; the implementation of improved stoves is made with a participatory approach where families identify the need to improve their traditional kitchens to facilitate the preparation of their food, reduce risks and improve quality, hygiene and taste of food. Then the families contribute labor and materials for the preparation of the improved stove.
(ii) Developing Local Markets; implementation of this technology promotes the development of local suppliers that manufacture the improved kitchen accessories. It also develops manpower for the construction, maintenance and repair of improved stoves.
In the local market there were no improved stoves parts suppliers, but after the intervention of ADRA Peru, local suppliers have specialized in this activity, primarily in the production of iron. The promoters are also trained to provide labor for the construction of stoves in areas where needed by other families or other institutions that are also implementing improved stoves.
(iii) Improving Technology Design and Performance; ADRA Peru conducted a study of models on the market and validated a design with the families who participated by providing ideas on how to meet the needs of mothers. Mothers identified saving cooking time as a benefit. Then an adjustment was made to meet needs of the real field situation, taking the time to cook food on the first burner and boiling time of water on the second burner. This model was presented to the Technical College "National Training for the Construction Industry" - Sencico and then certified by this institution as an improved stove.
The rules that are being used to certify or regulate this technology are international and are not adequately adapted to reality. ADRA Peru takes into account 3 criteria, and in the case of cooking it is the cooking time that is the main benefit identified by families. As for heating, cooking generates a temperature change in the environment for heat dissipation. For ventilation, the main benefit is that the improved stove allows the evacuation of smoke, which helps improve ventilation.
(iv) Monitoring Impacts of Interventions, ADRA Peru tracks the use and maintenance of improved stoves, and has identified as the first impact the duration of improved stoves. The second is the change to mothers' health and the evaluation of reduced greenhouse gases is still in the process.
Making sure the stove functions properly and also receives regular maintenance and meets the goal of evacuating the smoke, we make the concentration of suspended particles minimal, evacuating up to 90% of the ambient particulate wood pollutants in the kitchen. With this we are contributing to improving the health of families, essentially preventing respiratory diseases.
