Namalere Forest Conservation Youth Group

Mission

NFCYG's mission is to promote energy conservation and reduce deforestation in the western Kenya, by supporting community driven efforts and addressing environmental threats on a local scale within the Nile Basin region in the area of development and use of alternative energy and construction materials. We are in the process of carring out participatory planning and appraisals for Kanduyi, Chwele, Webuye, Kimilili, and Bumula Bungoma of western province Kenya. The project develops biogas as an alternative source of energy. The project produces TLUD gasifier cookstoves, biogas plants, and improved cook stoves, and repairs and sells energy saving equipment. Results include increasing awareness of global warming and greenhouse gas emission management by communities. The project involves installation of biogas plants, maintenance of biogas plants and rocket stoves, and research in energy and biogas plants.

Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

Social/cultural barriers are overcome by using local available methods, and taking practical actions to ensure full community participation and strong sense of local ownership. The project adopts three elements i.e use of the PRA (Participatory Rural Appraisal), community implementation of activities, and cost sharing. PRA is a noted methodology for facilitating community full participation in controlling their own development.

Market development for improved cooking technologies:

NFCYG is establishing a market based in institutional delivery of poverty alleviating technologies to create high demand. Our focus is on awareness creation, credit facilities, increased access to quality and smooth supply of product, and income generation to ensure supply focus is on credit facility training seminars, sensitization on manufacturing and business management.

Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

Ensure stoves' fuel use and reduction of smoke and green house gases. We are in the process of establishing quality control mechanisms in each project site at all stages to ensure supply of high quality products and sales services.

Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

Monitoring has been completed as a day to day routine using particulate pumps, personal CO breath monitors, questionnaires and impact monitoring.
