The Fortunecooker-Sustainable Energies

Mission

Promote the "Fortune Cooker" to enable some 4 billion people living in the sunbelt to cook their meals on clean solar energy instead of on highly polluting cookfires, thereby avoiding fuel wood searches, lung and other respiratory and eye deseases, avoiding deforestation and consequential loss of bio-diversity. Furthermore the "Fortune Cooker" is the fastest, cleanest least risky manner of mitigating present emissions from cookfires of carbon dioxide, black carbon, soot, methane, nitrogen oxide and other products of incomplete combustion, collectively causing far greater global warming than carbon dioxide itself.

Primary Initiatives, Target Populations, and Scope of Work:

Starting November 2003 the "Fortune Cooker" has been tested in the Almeria area of Southern Spain, cooking brunch in 12 minutes. Starting early 2006 field testing was started in the New Delhi/Gurgaon area of India. Long term exposure to highly corrosive ambient air indicated the necessity to change from aluminium components to solar glass, which improved longevity and cooking performance. Target populations are rural and periferial urban populations in many developing countries.

Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

Our "Fortune Cooker" offers the added option of electricity generation/battery charging on daylight, to enable electric lighting, TV-viewing, etc. in the evenings. We are considering a combination of highly efficient stoves used on sunless days with solar cooking on sunny days, this should go a long way (or all the way) to minimise consumption of firewood.

Market development for improved cooking technologies:

We are in favour of all improved cooking technologies that reduce human hardship, sicknesses, deforestation, global warming.

Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

We strongly believe that long-life technology standardisation, including materials used are keys to better/healthier cooking.

Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

Solar cooking is a highly visible outdoor activity. We think that by the use of efficient wood burning stoves (such as by Philips) cooking on fires can also be done outdoors
