Duration:
Oct 2007 - Oct 2009
Goals:
1. Upgrading of JEEP staff via demonstrations and cases, to be able to teach and supply knowledge within production and implementation of solar energy in Uganda 2. Implement models, manage them and maintain them 3. Carry out advocacy activities to cover solar energy and sensitize/cooperate with the authorities on implementation of solar energy in Uganda
Background:
JEEP solar energy project is funded by Danida and is carried out in partnership with the Nordic Folkecenter for Renewable Energy in Denmark. The project is implemented in Arua, Luwero, Tororo and Kampala. The project structure is such that the community elects a committee to run the installed systems on their behalf. The commitee includes 2 electricians who are trained by JEEP to carry out the maintenance work. Systems installed include a refrigerator at the health center, light in schools, battery charging, central light in local markets, lantern charging and phone charging systems. The income generated is used by the community to replicate the project in another area.
Expected Outcome:
1. Increased number of people using solar energy 2. Improved communication through availability of phone charging systems 3. Improved health from using lanterns instead of traditional paraffin lanterns 4. Decreased death due to availability of drugs and light at health centers 5. Increased working hours due to availability of light in markets
